West Central to Improve Window and Door Security with Grant Money

West Central School CorporationThe West Central School Corporation will be making some safety improvements thanks to a state grant. The school board accepted a Secured Schools Safety Grant from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Thursday.

Superintendent Don Street says the corporation will use the money to make the school buildings more secure, “We are planning on, through a matching grant, [getting] a Clear-Armor laminate, which will be put on the windows and the entrance doors. The purpose of that is to make the glass more secure to reduce the probability of breakage or someone trying to break in.” He says some other local schools have already had the laminate installed with great success.

Also during Thursday’s meeting, school officials discussed the preliminary ISTEP scores released by the State Department of Education. Street says parents had the chance to ask the state to double check their child’s scores, “We’ve encouraged all of our parents to request re-scores because of several questions that the state has actually brought up concerning the validity of the test.”

This is a change from previous years, when it was up to schools to request a re-score.
