N.J.-S.P. Teacher Lectures on Presidential Childhoods at Historical Society Meeting

The Starke County Historical Society held its annual meeting and dinner Thursday night at the Knox High School Cafeteria.

As part of the gathering, officers with the organization were elected. Ron Vendl was chosen as President, Ed Hasnerl was elected Vice President, and Peg Brettin was elected as the group’s Treasurer.

The gathering was not limited to business. Steven Lee, a Social Studies teacher at North Judson – San Pierre Middle School addressed the group about his research into the childhoods of U.S. Presidents.

Lee received a Lilly grant to visit 13 Presidential libraries, and to conduct research on the former president’s boyhood years. Herbert Hoover and George W. Bush were included in that list.

The Starke County Historical Society also used the annual meeting as an opportunity to give a memorial tribute to former group President Jim Shilling. He passed away last month.
