Walk for the Cure Planned in Winamac

Breast Cancer Pink RibbonLace up your sneakers and head to the Winamac Town Park tomorrow for a good cause. Pulaski Health Care Center is hosting the fifth annual Walk for the Cure from 1 until 4 p.m. EDT. Activities coordinator Jean Fort says all proceeds will go to the Indianapolis Komen for the Cure Chapter. There’s no cost to take part in the walk, but participants are urged to raise money by asking people to sponsor them.

Fort says several other events are planned as well, including a bake sale, face painting and a “get your pink on” booth featuring pink hair, boas and similar flair. Several donated prizes will be raffled off, and there will also be a 50-50 drawing.

Fort says the staff at Pulaski Health Care Center was looking for a way to give back to the community and decided to honor a colleague in the process.

“A staff member here at our facility, a young, young staff member, was struck with breast cancer, and she was kind of my inspiration for the reason why we chose to do Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer for our big fundraiser.”

Fort says she has since recovered and is doing well. Statistics indicate one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer within their lifetimes, and an estimated 32.5 million women worldwide will be diagnosed over the next 25 years.
