First responders in Starke County will have an easier time locating several homes thanks to the efforts of Kankakee Valley REMC employees. They spent the second annual Indiana’s Electric Cooperative Community Day installing reflective mailbox signs.

Adding reflective house numbers to mailboxes makes it easier for emergency responders to quickly respond to calls at night and also makes them easier to locate during the day. They also help REMC employees who are called out to repair power outages.

The reflective mailbox signs were made and installed free of charge to members in the Center and Washington Township areas of Starke County. They were hung off of mailboxes or nearby fence posts.

In one day, 40 KVREMC employees installed approximately 500 signs throughout the 72 square miles in Starke County. Officials say the project was so successful they plan to make it a multi-year effort, allowing all KVREMC members to eventually receive signs.
