Starke County Forest Dam Discussion Continues This Evening

starke-county-courthouseThe discussion of how to handle drainage issues caused by beavers in the Starke County Forest will continue during tonight’s county commissioners meeting. Surveyor Dennis Estok and representatives from Walkerton-based Territorial Engineering will present a proposal to the commissioners during their 6 p.m. session. The Drainage Board decided earlier this year to open a drainage point in the Starke County Forest. A beaver dam is causing neighboring land to flood. The Starke County Park Board, which oversees the forest, has since stepped in and asked that a long-term solution be found to the problem.

Other items on tonight’s commissioners agenda include a request from Sheriff Bill Dulin to increase the number of full-time jailers to staff the recently opened Starke County Justice Center. Carrie Block from 1st Choice Insurance will provide insurance renewal quotes, and Starke County Community Corrections will request a letter of support for a grant submission.

Starke County EMS and Highway will share their monthly reports, and bids will be opened for a bridge replacement project. The commissioners will also make appointments to the economic development commission board and fill vacancies on the board of zoning appeals and park boards.
