Council Approves Funds for Additional Jail Officers

Starke County Sheriff's Department BadgeStarke County Sheriff Bill Dulin can hire two additional full-time jail officers after action Monday night by the Starke County Council.

They unanimously approved his request to fund the positions from the jail CEDIT. That’s the fund into which dedicated county income taxes earmarked for the jail are receipted. The Starke County Commissioners previously gave their blessing to the additional hires. Dulin says adding them will ensure the jail is fairly well staffed around the clock. Part of that staff includes part-time employees. The new jail is larger than the previous one and can accommodate more inmates. Based on the population, Dulin says the state requires 12 officers per shift. He notes the county can handle that number by using a combination of full and part-time employees. Council members advised he can start looking for qualified applicants right away.
