North Judson Republicans Re-Elect Incumbent in Town Convention

NJConventionRepublicans in North Judson have made their choice for placement on the ballot in November.

A Town Convention was held to determine who would represent the Town Council’s Ward Two seat. Incumbent Wendy Hoppe was being challenged by Jesiah Clemons.

Hoppe has served on the North Judson Town Council for eight years, but was looking to serve another four. She says voters recognize her commitment to the Town.

“I’ve been in the town for 40 years as a business owner and also the dedication of the people I’ve worked for, as well as to support my business,” says Hoppe.

The convention was determined after the August 3rd filing deadline for communities without a primary. Clemons Independent filing for the North Judson Town Council was rejected by Starke County Clerk Vicki Cooley. His application to run as a Republican, however, was accepted.

The seat was North Judson’s only contested race. 64 residents gathered at the new fire station to sign-in and adopt the rules of the convention. More were in attendance to observe.

Both candidates spoke to their experience and community involvement prior to the vote. One-by-one vote cards were cast, only to be taken into a back room to be counted. Hoppe was declared the winner on a 39-25 vote.

Hoppe says her plan is pretty clear going forward.

“My plan is to have everybody work together so we can make this a wonderful city,” says Hoppe.

A simple majority was able to determine the vote, however, the Republican Party chair was available to cast the deciding vote.

Officials with the Republican Party in North Judson said they hope the party can come together heading into November’s General Election. Both candidates hugged following the vote.
