Winamac Safe Routes to School Project Nears Completion

During the Monday evening Winamac Town Council meeting Town Manager Brad Zellers provided an update about the ‘Safe Routes to School’ Program. The SRTS program first started up in 2012 after a grant was received allowing for more than 2,000 feet of trail and ADA compliant sidewalks leading from the school to the downtown area to be put in place.

This new trail hooks onto the existing trail that stopped short of town and provides a safe traffic-free area for students to walk to and from school.Construction for these routes began towards the end of May. Zellers said the trails and sidewalks are accessible and currently in use, however a few finishing touches still need to be done.

Some dirt needs leveled, grass seed needs to be spread and fences and signage still need to be put in place. He says The Town has been attempting to contact individuals with SRTS to come back and get the job done but they haven’t received any responses back. Despite the difficulty reaching the company, Zellers believes the routes will be completed prior to the start of the school year.
