The newest addition to the Indiana State Police Lowell post has four legs and a tail. Master Trooper Steve Caylor and his K-9 partner, Nikan, are graduates of the 2015 ISP K-9 Class. Caylor has been with the department for almost 20 years. Nikan is an 18 month old Malinherd, which is a cross between a Belgian Malinois and a German Shepherd.

He completed 500 hours of training during the 14 week academy. Topics covered include narcotic searches, aggression control work, building searches, tracking, article searches and obedience. “Nikan” is a certified Police Service Dog through the International Police Work Dog Association (IPWADA) in the detection of narcotic odors related to Methamphetamine, Marijuana, Cocaine, Crack Cocaine, Ecstasy and Heroin.

Caylor and Nikan will patrol the entire Lowell District, which includes Starke, Pulaski, Jasper, Newton, Lake, Porter and LaPorte Counties.
