VFW Post to Host Flag Retirement Ceremony

American flags that may have seen better days will be retired this weekend in Knox.

The VFW Post 748 is asking the public to bring their worn flags to an annual ceremony on Sunday. The service will be dedicated to retiring American flags that have lived past their usefulness.

VFW Commander Bob Sims says the numbers vary each year.

“We have several flags that we’re retiring that the public brings in and drops off,” says Sims.

The Flag Retirement Ceremony is coordinated on a national scale with VFW Posts around the country conducting similar events.

Members of the VFW post in Knox say they will lead the public in the Pledge of Allegiance and a salute to the flag during the event. “Taps” will also be played.

The national VFW organization provides information on proper flag disposal, including: folding, burning, and disposing of the ashes. Post 748 says it will be retiring the flags in a similar manner and will bury the remnants after burning the material.

Sims says residents are encouraged to avoid throwing American flags in the garbage.

“If they can, bring them to the Post or give them to one of the VFW members and they can bring them in and we’ll see that they’re properly retired,” says Sims.

The ceremony will take place at 6:00 p.m. at VFW Post 748.
