Knox Community Schools Superintendent A.J. Gappa says he plans to fulfill what remains of his contract.

Gappa spoke with WKVI News after it was learned he was provided written notice of non-renewal. That means members of the Knox School Board voted not to further extend the contract they have with the Superintendent during their meeting, Monday.

The agreement was set to expire on July 1st, 2016, but provided a one-year extension if the board failed to provide written notice. That means Gappa could no longer be with the school corporation on July 1st, 2018.

Gappa, who grew up in Knox, says he was making considerations on whether to retire shortly after the end of his 2018 contract period. That would put him at 10 years in the position.

Despite receiving the non-renewal notice, he says work will continue to do what he believes is best for the school corporation. Knox schools are facing pressing budget issues in the face of declining enrollment and state funding formula changes.

Gappa made note of the fact that he will not be resigning before the end of his contract period. Board members also said a buyout is not being considered at this time.

Even so, changes on the school board, either through elections or a change of heart, could alter the Superintendent’s current course. Gappa said he would stay with the school corporation longer if future events provide the opportunity.

According to Gappa, School Board members did not provide a reason to the Superintendent for the non-renewal.
