Starke County Tops Voter Turnout in May Primary

The Indiana Secretary of State’s Office says Starke County had the highest voter turnout in the state during the May municipal primary election.

Connie Lawson released her office’s Voter Turnout Report earlier this week, indicating 12-percent of the 2.6-million eligible voters cast a ballot in the Hoosier State.

Only voters who live in a town with an election this year, or a school corporation conducting a tax referendum had the opportunity to vote. 20 counties, including Pulaski County, did not hold a primary election.

Starke County saw 991 voters come to the polls, which is considered a 33.7-percent voter turnout.

LaPorte County had a 13.4-percent voter turnout.

According to the Secretary of State, May’s election saw a significant cost savings to local counties after implementing legislation to set-up vote centers. Starke County combined their precincts into the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center.

Lawson says she will be conducting a municipal voter outreach campaign to remind residents to register to vote in the fall.
