LaPorte Officers React to Armed Standoff with Suicidal Suspect

LaPorte Sheriff’s Deputies took a man into custody after a standoff where the subject was allegedly making suicidal threats.

According to information released by the department, the 31-year-old suspect became upset following a custody battle with his wife over their 2-year-old son. The mother was given custody of the child earlier in the day.

When authorities arrived on scene Friday evening, the subject was visible on the porch of a home in the 4800 West Block of County Road 1000 North and displaying a shotgun. The weapon was placed under his chin with his finger on the trigger according to Sheriff’s Deputies.

As the subject, who was speaking with a negotiator, approached officers, four “bean bag” rounds were fired, striking the man in the chest and hand. The incident disoriented the man long enough that deputies could take control of the situation.

The standoff lasted about one hour.
