Knox Salary Ordinance Includes Smaller Pay Raises

Knox City Council
Knox City Council

City of Knox employees will get smaller pay raises next year than they are used to. The salary ordinance passed on second reading last night by the city council includes 2-percent raises for full-time employees. Typically their salaries increase by 3-percent annually.

Casual laborers will be paid between $8.50 and $9.50 an hour, and the judge-pro-tem will earn $50 per day. Neither the crossing guard nor the animal control officer will get raises. Members of city boards and commissions will not receive any additional pay either.

Council members concede they would like to do more for city workers, but the so-called circuit breaker, which limits the amount of property tax that can be collected has put a crimp in their budget.

The salary ordinance will be before the council for final passage at their next meeting.
