State Senator Jim Arnold is promoting legislation that he anticipates will be signed into law in the coming weeks.

Much of the legislation championed by the LaPorte Democrat provides help to military veterans and emergency responders.

Senate Enrolled Act 298 gives employers the ability to enroll in a voluntary program to give veterans preference in hiring and retaining veterans. According to a press release from Senator Arnold’s offices, the bill is designed to help with “stubborn” employment situations for many of the Hoosier State’s veterans.

Most of the new laws become effective July 1st of this year.

Arnold says he also supported a bill this session that would eliminate the statute of limitations for rape cases so long as certain requirements are met. Among the specifications is providing DNA evidence or audio/visual recordings of a suspect admitting guilt.

On the flip side, Senator Arnold also supported a bill allowing confidentiality in victim services. The bill was designed to allow law enforcement agencies discretion when allowing information about victims during public records requests.

The laws may soon be signed into law by Governor Mike Pence.
