Lincoln Funeral Train Commemoration Planned in San Pierre

Abraham LincolnThe unique event of a train stopping in San Pierre in 1865, which carried the coffin of assassinated President Abraham Lincoln, will be remembered in that community with a program this afternoon at 2 p.m.

The Starke County Historical Society will also place a rock monument with an appropriate bronze plaque on the grounds near where the Monon Line railway, which carried the President’s body through northwestern Indiana, once operated.

The monument and today’s program will be on the premises of the former Little Company of Mary Hospital, just south of San Pierre, on US 421. The monument will be dedicated at a later date.

The program will include presentation of information about Lincoln’s life as a Hoosier and the story of a young San Pierre resident who jumped onto the funeral train in San Pierre and rode it to Springfield, Ill., where he attended Lincoln’s final funeral services 150 years ago. On display will be some special Lincoln memorabilia.

Special performances are scheduled by the Culver Pipes and Drums and the Living History Club, also from Culver.
