Engineers to Check for Asbestos in Rubble from Collapsed Building

Sportsman bar second dayPulaski County Building Administrator David Dare has been in contact with an engineering company for the purpose of requirements to check for the presence of asbestos in the debris from a building collapse last week.

Dare explained that it’s required by law to check commercial buildings for the presence of asbestos prior to demolition. Since the structure fell on its own, the requirement still stands. Expert services by a commercial asbestos removal company will be necessary in these situations.

Officials continue in their clean up efforts at the site in downtown Monterey that formerly housed Sportsman’s Bar and Grill at the corner of Walnut and Main Streets.

Dare believes that water deteriorated the integrity of the exterior of the brick building which led to Thursday’s incident. He had no indication of any serious structural issues prior to the collapse.

Dare will give an update on the project during tonight’s Monterey Town Council meeting at 7 p.m. ET at the Monterey Town Hall.
