Rural Knox Resident Airlifted After Severe Accident in Valpo

 
 

Police in Valparaiso were called to the scene of an accident Saturday morning that saw the driver airlifted from the scene.

The incident occurred just before 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of State Road 49 and County Road 500 North. According to the Police Department, 22-year-old John Binkowski of rural Knox was stopped at a red light when an oncoming semi-tractor trailer allegedly disregarded to the signal.

According to police, the semi then struck the rear of Binkowski’s vehicle, pushing it into the intersection. The Valparaiso Fire Department was called to the scene to extricate the driver from the vehicle. Police say Binkowski was trapped inside.

Binkowski was airlifted to a Chicago hospital for additional treatment. Police say his injuries were severe from the crash. His current medical status is unknown.

The roadway was closed for a number of hours while the accident scene was being investigated.

The driver of the semi was ticketed in the incident. No additional charges have been filed at this time, but the case has been forwarded to the Porter County prosecutor.

An investigation continues.
