The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to an area just south of LaPorte city limits to a single vehicle crash.
The incident occurred just before 8 a.m. on Sunday. Officers say they located a 1996 GMC on its side on state road 39. The driver – identified as 23-year-old Brooke Knight – was found trapped under the vehicle. She had to be extricated with the aid of multiple area fire departments.
An investigation led authorities to believe Knight’s vehicle was traveling southbound on state road 39 when it crossed into the northbound lanes before driving off the roadway. The vehicle hit a driveway embankment, causing it to flip multiple times.
Knight was ejected from the vehicle prior to being pinned in the crash. Alcohol may allegedly have been a factor in the incident. Additional tests are being conducted.
The crash closed the roadway for about an hour Sunday morning while the work and investigation were being completed.
Knight was taken by helicopter to receive additional treatment. Her state is not currently known.
