IRS Scam Targets LaPorte Man

A LaPorte man is being described as the victim of an Internal Revenue Service scam according to police.

The 53-year-old says he received a phone call from a man claiming to be an IRS agent, and that he needed to pay nearly $1-thousand or be subject to arrest. Following the suspect’s advice, the victim sent pre-paid credit cards through Western Union.

After learning he was the victim of a scam, he attempted to stop payment, but the funds had already been claimed.

Police say IRS scams can often be aggressive in nature and advise anyone receiving a phone call not to give out personal or financial information over the phone.

Those who think they owe money to the IRS are asked to call their offices for assistance paying.

Police say that if you believe you’re the victim of an IRS scam, to file a police report and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. You can also contact the three major credit bureau’s to place a fraud alert on your credit records.
