Changing Weather Brings Flood Preparation Recommendations

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security is providing a few tips as rain comes into the state.

Rain can often add to problems caused by snow accumulation such as making the burden heavier on area roofs. Others include the potential for flooding in the state.

IDHS says that by using a roof rake to remove snow and watching for signs of overburdened structures, it can help alleviate problems related to rain in March. According to a press release, jammed doors at the front or back of the home and popping noises indicate heavy weights on the roof.

Flooding conditions can develop quickly. The IDHS recommends staying up-to-date with changing weather conditions. Clearing nearby storm drains is also recommended to prevent unnecessary flooding.

The department also advises residents that flood insurance is often sold separately from any homeowners insurance policy.
