Group Asking For Donations to Complete Downtown Beautification Project

Time is running out for donations to be made that will help complete a downtown project in Knox.

30 high school seniors have been working on plans to develop a Serenity Garden. That space is expected to be completed this spring before classes let out for the summer. The project aims to beautify the Knox downtown.

English teacher John Poindexter says they can’t do the project without help.

“Naturally we don’t have funds at the school to buy everything,” says Poindexter. “This is a project the students would normally just do the paperwork on, but the students actually wanted to do the project and have some civic pride for their town.”

The students are asking for items to be donated for the project. Some include benches, tables, trees, and a fairly expensive gazebo. Individuals donating will receive their name on a plaque. The group is still selling bricks for donation as well.

Students recently discussed their project with members of the Knox City Council – something that Poindexter says saw broad support.

He says there have been benefits with the students as well.

“They’re really energetic about making the downtown business district look a better, and they’ve even come up with ideas for the lot on the south side of the street now,” says Poindexter.

That means future projects could include building a bandstand for community events on the weekends. That could be added next year.

Items for this year’s project, however, need to be delivered by March so students can start the work, according to a press release.
