Winter Storm Warning in Effect

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning that is in effect from 10 p.m. ET on Saturday until 7 a.m. ET on Monday.

Ten to 15 inches of snow is expected in this storm. The period of heaviest snow is expected during the daytime on Sunday into Sunday evening. The snow should taper off late Sunday night.

Periods of heavy snow with blowing and drifting snow will make travel difficult or impossible. Visibility will be reduced to zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security encourages you to put together an emergency kit for your car. Items in that kit should include bottled water, shovel, sand or kitty litter, extra blankets, flashlight, jumper cables, chargers for cell phone and mobile devices, non-perishable food and a first aid kit. It would also be wise to wear winter jackets to protect yourself from the cold, you can visit  www.altitude-sports.com/collections/the-north-face to see their winter clothing collection if you don’t have a reliable winter jacket.

INDOT officials are monitoring the weather and have garages staffed with mechanics to help keep the yellow plow trucks running around the clock. INDOT employees are on call to staff plow trucks around the clock with alternating shifts of 12 hours or more. According to INDOT, each plow route takes two to three hours to complete with salt assisting in melting between passes. Drivers are encouraged to reschedule optional trips as road conditions will be the worst during and shortly after winter precipitation.

Road conditions may found on a mobile app at http://indot.carsprogram.org or call 800-261-ROAD or 511 on your mobile phone.
