First Lady, ISDH Partner to Reduce Infant Deaths

Mrs. Pence takes time to talk to students about her role as the First Lady of Indiana and the importance of government.

Indiana’s first lady, along with the Indiana State Department of Health, have announced a new initiative.

The campaign called “Labor of Love” looks to raise awareness about infant mortality in the Hoosier state. According to a press release, Indiana ranks near the bottom compared with other states for infant mortality.

First Lady Karen Pence says the campaign gives pregnant woman the support they need to help ensure the health of their child. Educational outreach for mothers is also included in the initiative and will include safe sleeping habits and dialing a help line with any questions.

Indiana was ranked 46th nationally in 2011 with a rate of 7.7 infant deaths for every 1000 live births. National rates reported numbers in the 6.1 range. The state was able to lower that figure in follow years, though.

Complications, malformations, and a few other causes have been linked with infant deaths – which are considered to be before the child’s first birthday.

Indiana’s first lady says a real difference can be made by working together.
