Several Local Programs Planned to Celebrate Veterans Day

Today we pause to honor the sacrifices of the men and women who have served in our nation’s armed services. Veterans Day is celebrated each Nov. 11th. That’s the date in 1918 on which fighting between the Allied Nations and Germany stopped, marking the unofficial end of World War I. The following year President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11th Armistice Day. That celebration evolved into Veterans Day after World War II.

Federal, state and local government offices are closed, and mail will not be delivered today. Celebrations are planned in many schools and communities to pay tribute to the men and women who have served our nation. Oregon-Davis High School will serve breakfast to veterans this morning from 8:30 until 9:30 prior to a 9:45 a.m. program in the gymnasium. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Knox High School is also hosting a Veterans Day program at 9 a.m. The guest speaker is retired U.S. Air Force Sgt. Victoria Powers. She graduated from Knox in 1985. Members of the public are welcome to attend that program as well. The Veterans Day program at Knox Middle School starts at 10 a.m. in the Weinberg Gymnasium.

Pulaski County veteran Jim Terry will headline this morning’s program at Winamac Community High School. It starts at 9:25 a.m. EDT. The community Veterans Day program in Pulaski County will take place in front of the courthouse in downtown Winamac at 11 a.m. EDT. Bob Klineman is speaking, and David Broad is the chaplain.

Members of the public are also invited to the North Judson-San Pierre High School auditorium this afternoon at 1 p.m. for a program put on by middle school students.
