Motorist Hospitalized After Train Hits Vehicle

A motorist was admitted to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center with a broken neck Sunday morning after he unsuccessfully attempted to beat an oncoming train. Walkerton Police were called just after 8 a.m. to the crossing on County Road 104 in St. Joseph County.

Maurice Richmond, 33, was driving, according to our reporting partners at WNDU-TV. Authorities say he drove around an already parked car and tried to cross the tracks heading south. The train struck Richmond’s vehicle at 52 miles per hour. Richmond was cited for driving under the influence. A passenger, Heather Lentz, 39, was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital, after which she was arrested on an outstanding warrant.
