The town of Culver is the recipient of a sizeable grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs. The $500,000 grant will go toward the town’s proposed new water treatment plant. Culver Clerk-Treasurer Karen Heim says the current plant is nearly 50 years old and needs to be replaced. She says the project will cost an estimated $1.4 million. The town will cover the rest of the cost by obtaining a low-interest loan from the state.

A public hearing will also be held later this month on proposed water and sewer rate increases. Sewer rates have not gone up since 2005, and water rates were last raised in 2009. Heim says the proposed increases will happen in two phases. The first will increase the average residential water bill by $4.20 beginning in December. The sewer rate will go up $2 per month beginning in the same time period. The second phase starts May 1, 2015 and will increase water bills by $5.04, while sewer bills will go up another $2.30 in December of 2015. The public hearing will take place during the Culver Town Council meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m. ET.
