Counterfeit $20 bills turned up at two La Porte businesses over the weekend. A representative of J&J Liquors at 714 E. Lincolnway told La Porte Police that they unknowingly accepted a counterfeit $20 bill from a customer sometime on Friday, Sept. 26. Their bank notified them that the fake bill was included in the deposit for the day’s receipts. On Saturday, Sept. 27 around 3:30 p.m. officers were called to the Citgo at 104 E. Lincolnway to investigate a counterfeit $20 bill that had just been presented for payment. A store employee told them the customer who paid with the bill was just leaving. Officers stopped the man, who voluntarily showed them his wallet, which was full of $20 bills.
This is the third counterfeit $20 bill that’s turned up recently in La Porte County.
