The Marshall County Safety Committee met this week to go over protocols to make sure all are on the same page when dealing with severe weather, school incidents and roads.
School representatives from Plymouth, Argos, Bremen, Culver, Triton, John Glenn and Culver Military Academy all spoke, commenting on current procedures and things they’d like to focus on in a possible work session.
Plymouth School Superintendent Dan Tyree explained that he will bring a proposal to the school board in October to add a three hour delay to the start of school as an option during severe weather in the winter months.
Tyree said there were a few times during the last winter season where a three hour delay would have been reasonable rather than canceling school. In the case of a three hour delay, the school day would be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET. Tyree commented that adding that extra hour at the end of the day in these instances would not require a make-up day at the end of the year.
Triton School Superintendent Donna Burroughs asked the Indiana State Police and INDOT representatives to check on a request to place a flashing light at State Road 331 and Liberty Street as students often utilize that route when going to and from school. Troy Heckman from Culver Military Academy asked that a work session include reunification efforts and the review of best practices during emergency situations in order to improve.
Another suggestion made was to hold bomb threat training with the police to better plan if such a situation would occur at any of the schools. Communication between schools and the sheriff’s department was also discussed in case internet and/or cell phone service was not available in the case of an emergency.
A work session was not immediately scheduled, but the next Marshall County Safety meeting was set for Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 9 a.m. ET.
