A Michigan City man was arrested on Tuesday for being a non-compliant sex offender.

In August, officers found that Michael Sofranko, 36, was no longer living at his registered address and did not complete his annual registration with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department.

Sofranko was convicted of a felony child molesting charge in LaPorte Circuit Court in 1998. He was also identified as an offender against children. As a result, he is required to register as a sex offender with law enforcement until 2022.

Since Sofranko is an offender against children, he has residency restrictions that prohibit him from living within 1,000 feet of a school, youth program center or a public park.

On Tuesday, he was found living in a home on East 11th Street in Michigan City. The home is located next door to a licensed day care facility.

He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the LaPorte County Jail on a preliminary charge of sex offender residency restriction violation, a Level 6 felony. His bond has been set at $1,500.
