High-Speed Pursuit Still Under Investigation

The investigation into Wednesday’s high-speed pursuit through Grovertown and into Marshall County is continuing. A Starke County Sheriff’s Deputy initially tried to stop a car driven by Paul Coffin on U.S. 30 at 1200 East. Coffin drove for another mile before pulling over, according to information released by the Starke County Sheriff’s Department. As the deputy was getting out of his car, Coffin reportedly backed into it, causing the patrol car to strike the deputy.

Coffin pulled forward, and the deputy fired three shots into the vehicle. Coffin took off, according to police. Another Starke County Sheriff’s Deputy joined the pursuit, which continued into Marshall County.

Coffin jumped out of his moving vehicle as it topped a hill on 7B Road, according to authorities. The car hit a mailbox before coming to a stop in a bean field, and Coffin took off on foot through a nearby woods. A Starke County Sheriff’s Deputy chased him, tased him and arrested him. Coffin was treated at a local hospital before being released to the Starke County Jail. The incident is under investigation by the Indiana State Police since it involved an officer firing shots. Formal charges have not yet been filed against Coffin. Officers from the Marshall County, Knox, LaPorte, Walkerton, North Liberty and Indiana State Police Departments all assisted.
