Public Meeting Scheduled Tonight to Discuss New Fire Station

Plans for a new 9,300 square foot fire station in downtown Hamlet will be presented during a public meeting this evening at 6 p.m. at the existing fire hall on Pearl Street.

A legal notice published in the Aug. 14 “Leader” describes the project as a “wood-framed system with metal roofing, metal siding and slab-on-grade.” The notice states the building will be constructed at 11 W. Indiana Ave. in Hamlet, which is just east of the Starke County Fairgrounds. Davis Township secured the property from the Oregon-Davis School Corporation earlier this year.

Sources close to the project tell WKVI News the new building will house eight fire trucks and have an adjacent space for a community center.

The first of two pre-bid meetings for contractors interested in the project will take place this afternoon at 2 p.m. CDT at the fire station. That meeting is open to the public. A second pre-bid meeting is scheduled Monday, Aug. 25 at 2 p.m. The Hamlet Clerk-Treasurer’s Office is accepting bids for the project until 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 8, at which time they will be opened and read.
