Area Schools Prepping for First Day of School

Doors will open to students next week at our area school corporations.

Oregon-Davis School Superintendent Greg Briles explained that some teachers have been training with Apple representatives to better understand how they can provide a more effective use of the technology that is available in the buildings. Briles said a back to school event is set for Monday.

“On Monday evening from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. CT, we are having what we are going to start calling a traditional cookout,” said Briles. “We’ll have hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, iced tea, lemonade, and water for everybody if they’d like to come out and join us. They can go through the buildings. If any of the children want to bring their supplies in prior to the start of school on Wednesday, this would give them an opportunity to meet their teacher and get their supplies in there so they’re not having to carry everything on the school buses the first day.”

West Central School Superintendent Don Street said students have been registering this week and if students still need to register there is still time to do so. New teachers will be reporting today and a back to school/meet the teacher night is set for Monday, Aug. 11 for students in kindergarten through fifth grade from 6 to 7 p.m. ET.

Street added that the entire student body will work with computers.

“The fourth grade level on up through the seniors will have the Google Chromebook and our kindergarten through third grade will have iPads. That’s an exciting thing. We’re moving to the one-on-one and the teachers have had some training on that. We still have the paper textbooks and we’ll continue to do that but as the world changes we’ll change with that,” said Street.

Eastern Pulaski School Superintendent Dan Foster said last minute maintenance issues are being taken care of and things will be set for the start of school. Back to school night will be on Monday, Aug. 11.

“Elementary is from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and the middle school/high school goes from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. ET that night,” explained Foster. “It gives parents and students a chance to come in, meet their teachers and find classrooms – especially if they’re new students. We also allow kids to bring stuff and put them in their lockers that night so they don’t have to bring so much on the bus the next day.”
