Household Hazardous Waste Event Planned in LaPorte County

LaPorte-TRIADNeedles, syringes and anything sharp can be disposed of during the household hazardous waste collection event on Saturday, Aug. 23 in LaPorte.

Personnel at the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department have had a recent influx of the disposal of needles and syringes in the lobby’s drop box. To reduce a health hazard, cap the needles and place them in an empty plastic detergent bottle and dispose of them in one of the seven hazardous waste collection events held by the LaPorte County Solid Waste District. Free hazard stickers are available to place on those bottles to warn of its contents.

The lobby drop box is better suited for the disposal of unwanted, expired or unused solid medications. Boxes are located in the lobbies of the sheriff’s department and the LaPorte and Michigan City Police Departments. They are accessible 24 hours a day.

The drop boxes are there to help prevent experimentation, addiction, overdose and death.

The household hazardous waste event is planned for Aug. 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. CT at the fairgrounds and is open to all LaPorte County residents.
