Planting Season is Progressing on Schedule

The planting season was only slightly delayed after all of the winter weather and cool, stormy spring seasons the Northern Indiana area has seen.

Chad Rushing, Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator at Purdue Extension in Starke County and in Pulaski County, told WKVI that last week found a lot of farmers in the fields getting their seeds planted for the growing season. All of the corn has been planted and the soybean fields are next on the list. Specialty crops like seed corn and vegetables have not yet been planted.

Rushing said last week’s weather was optimal for planting. The storms that came through the area on Sunday night didn’t cause any problems as the ground was dry and the soil needed the moisture. No ponding was seen in the fields in the immediate area.

He added that some seeds were in the ground three weeks ago but with the cool temperatures germination was a little delayed and those crops are just now starting to emerge.

This week may not be as productive for farmers with the weather, but the window in which to plant crops is still good.
