The Indiana State Police and the Drug Enforcement Agency will be collecting unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs at any state police post on Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time. The state police toll road post will not be able to accept these items.
This is a chance for you to get rid of these medications and prevent pill abuse and theft. Controlled substances and ADHD medication will be accepted. Needles will not be taken. The collection is intended for liquid and pill medications only.
The last Drug Take Back event was in October where police collected 1,451 pounds of medications. DEA members collected 324 tons of prescription drugs at 5,683 sites.
The Drug Take Back event addresses a public safety and public health issue. Unused and unwanted prescription drugs are susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Expired medications could have a deadly effect if ingested. Flushing medications down the toilet or throwing them in the garbage pose a safety and health risk.
If you are unable to make it to a state police post to dispose of medications, you may drop them off in a secured container at the Knox City Police Department or at the Starke County Sheriff’s Department at any time.
