He explained that the school had a decline in enrollment of 52 students over the past four to five years. With that and the addition to some legislation changes, the school has lost over $800,000 within that time frame.
“For a small corporation, that’s quite a chunk,” said Mellon. “I also did include with that – if the state would have stayed with their guaranteed two-percent increase in funding each year, for the 2014 budget we would have received over $1.2 million more for our general fund.”
He commented that this is what small schools are struggling with. He encourages residents to speak to their legislators about this before the next budget session rolls around next year.
“Next year for their legislative sessions they will be talking about their two-year budget again so if we can influence them to look at education strongly and be thinking of the small schools that are out here struggling a little bit.”
