St. Joe Medical Center in Plymouth Announces Expansion

The St. Joseph Regional Medical Center has announced a future expansion at its Plymouth campus featuring a new, state-of-the-art Emergency Department. The hospital is expected to break ground for the expansion project at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 28, beginning the work of constructing the new 12,000 square-foot Emergency Department located adjacent to the Plymouth hospital’s current Emergency Department.

SJRMC is welcoming the entire community to celebrate the groundbreaking with light refreshments. Loretta Schmidt, president of SJRMC in Plymouth, said this is an exciting endeavor for the entire Plymouth community. She said the new building will not only transform emergency care in Marshall and the surrounding counties, but it will help to further develop a superior experience for their patients.

The new Emergency Department will increase capacity by more than 60 percent, streamline emergency care and increase patient safety and privacy. The new Emergency Department will feature a larger waiting area with a dedicated children’s play area.

Officials say care will not be disrupted during construction. Once the new construction is completed, the original space will be re-purposed to support Emergency Department administration, diagnostic imaging and other hospital services. The total project is scheduled to be completed by September 2015 at a cost of $9 million.

MPA Architects, of South Bend, has been selected to design the new space. Construction will begin in June.
