Pulaski County Animal Shelter Still in the Works

The seven-member board of directors for the soon-to-be-established Pulaski County Animal Shelter continues in their endeavor, having recently cleared a number of hurdles as they seek to create the much-needed shelter in the county. Board member Jaime Keller told WKVI that the building they are interested in renting, located at 13 E. Indian Hill Road in Winamac, was recently approved for rezoning and a special exception for the kennels.

Keller said the group is still in the process of meeting with the county commissioners to get the final details worked out in the very long process of establishing the animal shelter. The organization will hold a garage sale on Saturday, April 26 at the their location on Indian Hill Road from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to raise funds for the shelter, with items including baby clothes, furniture and many others to be sold as well.

This animal shelter differs from the county animal control director in that the shelter is privately funded, while animal control works for the county. Keller said they hope to take in all animals – stray, abandoned or other – but they must first start off small.

The Pulaski County Community Foundation has a startup fund for the organization as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, allowing donors to make tax-deductible donations to the effort. There is no specific goal yet as to how much the organization is looking to raise, but Keller said they desperately need donations in order to grow bigger and better serve the county. If all goes according to plan, Keller said, the shelter could open toward the summer.
