Work Continues to Establish Pulaski County Animal Shelter

A group of community volunteers in Pulaski County is continuing in their effort to establish an animal shelter for the county. A seven-member board has been named for the endeavor, and board member Karen Shidler said they are now looking to get the final approval from the Winamac Town Board to proceed with renting a building.

Shidler said the building that has been offered to rent is located approximately one mile north of Winamac on U.S. 35, but it is in the wrong zoning area. As a result, she said, they have asked for it to be rezoned and for a special exception for the kennels. The zoning board approved the request, she said, but now it goes to the town board for their approval.

Shidler said they are hoping, if all goes according to plan, to open the doors to their facility within the next two to three months.

“During this whole process, we have been trying to finalize all of our documents and the paperwork side of things. We need to purchase kennels and actually clean up the building, get it ready for the animals, that kind of thing. Within two to three months, we hope to be able to open the doors and be open to the public,” Shidler said.
