Sheriffs Report No Citations Issued, Be Smart When Travelling in Inclement Weather

While St. Joseph County sheriff’s deputies have written several citations during a declared snow emergency, the sheriffs in Starke, Pulaski, Marshall, and LaPorte Counties have reported no tickets given to any drivers.

If a “Warning Level” travel advisory emergency declaration has been issued and residents are ordered to stay off the roads, a fine may be assessed if a driver interferes with highway snow removal crews or emergency personnel while responding to an emergency. A fine may also apply to a driver who has abandoned a vehicle in a roadway.

Marshall County Sheriff Tom Chamberlin told WKVI that residents should use common sense when deciding to go out when warned by county officials to stay off the roads. He said safety is the number one priority of his department and advises all to adhere to any emergency declaration as issued by county officials.
