Marshall County Police Arrest Suspected Drug Dealer

An Indianapolis woman wound up in the Marshall County Jail after a traffic stop late Tuesday night. A Marshall County Police officer pulled Christina Wengerter, 31, over on U.S. 31 and 3A road just after 11:30 p.m. for several moving violations. County Police K-9 Arras was walked around the vehicle during the stop and indicated the presence of narcotics. A search turned up about 200 grams of what is believed to be marijuana, according to the police report. The substance was also reportedly packaged in a way used to deal marijuana. Wengerter is charged with possession of marijuana greater than 30 grams and dealing marijuana.

Wind Chill Advisory in Effect Until Mid-Morning

A combination of falling temperatures and brisk west winds will make it feel like it’s 10 to 20 below zero. Knox City Council Approves Additional CR300E Project Expense

The Knox City Council this week approved a motion declaring the County Road 300 East reconstruction endeavor as a economic development project to allow the city to pay for an unexpected expense out of the County Economic Development Income Tax Fund. Charles Weaver, executive director of the Starke County Economic Development Commission, approached the council and explained that part of the reconstruction of County Road 300 East from Culver Road to west of the city, a number of fire hydrants will have to be relocated.

Recent Warm-Up Not Enough to Stave Frozen Pipes

 
 
The weather may have warmed up a bit, and some of the recent rains have caused the snow to melt away, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe to stop running those faucets to prevent frozen pipes. Many area residents are still suffering from frozen pipes, and with area municipalities offering credits to those who have been running their water, there is no reason to rush in turning off the tap.

Police to Conduct Operation Pull Over as Basketball Season Approaches

 
 
With basketball expected to stir up some activity this March, more than 250 Hoosier law enforcement agencies have announced plans to launch action of their own as part of Operation Pull Over. According to a press release from the state police, the effort begins Friday, Feb. 28 and runs through Sunday, March 23, with agencies initiating a major enforcement effort to crack down on impaired and dangerous driving.

Second Suspect Arrested in Grovertown Burglary

 
 

A second suspect in a recent Grovertown burglary is jailed after his arrest yesterday in Marshall County by detectives from the Starke County Sheriff’s Office. Glenn Manns, 28, of Knox, is being held at the Starke County Jail on preliminary charges of burglary, forgery and receiving stolen property. His bond has not yet been set. He’s the second person to be arrested in connection with a burglary reported Jan. 17 by a resident in the 5000 North block of 1100 East in Grovertown. According to investigators, the property owner reported he had received several of the stolen items back. Other items were reportedly taken to a scrap yard, pawned or returned to a local auto parts store. Officers served three search warrants in Starke and Marshall Counties. On Feb. 13 they arrested Jack Royce, 28, of Knox. He’s charged with burglary and receiving stolen property and is jailed on a $50,000 bond in Starke County.

National Weather Service Extends Tippecanoe River Flood Warning

 
 

The flood warning for the Tippecanoe River near Ora has been extended through the weekend. Last night at 8 the river was at 14 feet and steady. Flood stage is 12 feet, and moderate flooding will continue through the weekend. The river is now expected to fall below flood stage around 4 p.m. on Saturday. At 14 feet, extensive flooding of residences and low-lying areas begins to occur. This crest compares to last April 21 when the Tippecanoe crested at 14.4 feet near Ora.

LaPorte County Detectives Seeking Information in 27-Year-Old Murder Case

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department continues to seek information into the disappearance of 10-year-old Linda Lynn Weldy.

It was Feb. 24, 1987 when Weldy exited the school bus in front of her residence and was never again seen alive. Her mother reported her missing later that evening and it wasn’t until March 17, 1987 when her body was found on an abandoned railroad right-of-way near County Road 500 South near Kingsbury. She had been murdered.

Flood Threat Remains Along Rivers in Northern Indiana

 
 
Area emergency management directors are keeping an eye on water levels from last week’s rain and rapid snow melt.

Marshall County EMA Director Clyde Avery said the Yellow River crested and is on its way down. In Tippecanoe, the river is out of its banks along Blackford Drive and water is seeping into the back yards of properties that sit along that portion of the river. On Monday afternoon, the river level was at 13.97 feet; major flooding occurs at 14 feet. Avery is closely monitoring both rivers.

Oregon-Davis to Hold Community Meeting to Discuss a Balanced Calendar

The Oregon-Davis School Board held discussion on a proposed balanced calendar system that could be initiated in the 2015-2016 school year.

Superintendent Greg Briles said information is now being put together to present in a community meeting on Wednesday, March 12 at 6 p.m. and the balanced calendar will not be the only topic of discussion.
