Hamlet Town Board Discussed Frozen Meters, Junk Ordinance Amendment

The Town of Hamlet hasn’t had many complaints of frozen water mains or meters, but the clerk’s office is urging citizens to keep a drip in the faucet so water issues stay few. Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts noted that only three frozen meter reports have been made.

The town board will be approving the final reading of an amendment to the junk ordinance. Fees were changed which constitutes the advertisement and approval of an amendment.

The ordinance states that it is unlawful to harbor garbage, refuse or waste on one’s property if it constitutes a public nuisance or is deemed a danger to the health or safety of the public. Anyone in violation of this ordinance will be given a notice by the Hamlet Police Department. The area will be required to be cleaned up within 10 days of the notice.

Any violator refusing or neglecting to completely remove and properly dispose of the dumped or discarded matter within ten days will receive a citation. A separate offense will be given upon each day the violation occurs. The second violation will be a $50 fine per day up to ten days. A third violation will result in a $100 fine per day up to ten days. The fourth and subsequent violation will be a $150 fine for every day thereafter.

The Hamlet Town Board members will act on the final reading of this amended ordinance during their next regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hamlet Town Hall.
