LaPorte Man Arrested Following Traffic Stop; $500 Confiscated

A traffic stop in LaPorte resulted in an arrest and confiscation of more than $500 in cash. On Friday, Jan. 3 around 11:30 p.m., police stopped a silver Ford Escape for a speed violation and for traveling in the opposite lane of travel, according to the report. The driver was found to be Jeremy Klement, 21 of LaPorte, and a LaPorte County Sheriff K-9 reportedly alerted to the presence of drugs during a free air sniff of the vehicle during the course of the stop.

Police proceeded to search both Klement and his male passenger, and found Klement to be in possession of $552 in cash and baggies of a white powder substance which later field tested positive for heroin. In addition, police reportedly found several blue oval pills inside a cigarette pack in the interior of the vehicle.

The passenger was reportedly not in possession of contraband and was released from the scene. Klement, however, was taken into custody and faces charges of Dealing in a Schedule I Drug – heroin – as a Class B felony and Possession of a Schedule IV Drug, a Class D felony.
