College Need Not Be Intimidating, Says Ancilla Admissions Director

As we embrace the new year, now is the perfect time to make a resolution to improve your education. Eric Wignall, director of admissions at Ancilla College, said the college is the perfect two-year school to launch you on your path to higher education. He said it helps build a foundation on which to build a strong education, increasing the number of opportunities in your life.

Wignall said college education doesn’t have to be a four-, five- or six-year adventure. Students can take a simple course to learn more about accounting, computers or other topics without pursuing a degree. On top of that, he said credits from another institution may be eligible for transfer.

“This is the secret of higher ed is that freshman writing and college Algebra and American History 101 are the same course at Yale and Oxford as they are at Ancilla College. The freshman and sophomore of university and college life are the freshman and sophomore years, so those core courses almost always transfer,” Wignall said.

And with the college’s We Believe in You program, there’s no better time to give college a shot and see where it takes you.

“The college offers the We Believe in You program. It’s a free college course, no strings attached, to any student 21 years or older who never went to college, who maybe went off to college but didn’t earn nine credits – they bounced off of something. They didn’t like it, or something else intervened. We give them the chance; it doesn’t matter if you’re 20, 30, 40 years old – you can come back to college,” Wignall said.

College may seem like a daunting experience, but Wignall said Ancilla College is a small college with less than 500 students, offering a more personal educational experience. The college employs one instructor for every nine students – something that very few colleges can boast.

“We have counselors available; we have people who can work with you. We don’t have TAs; please understand that we don’t even have a lecture hall! We have small classes and instructors you can actually go talk to,” Wignall said.
