The Starke County Commissioners met in a special session with the building corporation for the construction of the Starke County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center prior to the commissioner’s regularly scheduled meeting. Commissioner Kathy Norem explained the meeting was necessary in order to appoint a lessor representative to allow them to approve and pay claims.

Norem told the board that vendors are required to submit claims before the last working day each month in order to have the claims approved at the next meeting. Because of this, she said it was vital that the lessor representative be appointed in order to ensure the claims are reviewed before approval.

The board approved a motion to appoint Norem as the Starke County Building Corporation’s lessor representative, effective immediately, for a period of one year. Auditor Kay Chaffins will serve as an alternative representative if Norem is unavailable.

A construction update was also heard regarding the detention center project. The crews are removing trees and will soon begin removing topsoil, and inside the building, carpets and lights have been removed. Up next is the installation of electrical rough-in and work on the foundation as well.
