Check Snow Removal Ordinances in Your Area

The start of the winter season isn’t for another two weeks, but Mother Nature has made her presence known in a couple of recent snowy events in the Kankakee Valley.

It is recommended to check with your local city officials to see if an ordinance exists for snow removal from sidewalks. The city of LaPorte has an ordinance regulating the placement of snow removed from sidewalks, driveways and parking lots.

Snow or ice removed from any sidewalk, parking lot, driveway or other privately owned area shall be stored on private property and shall not be deposited on any street, sidewalk or public right-of-way which may create a hazardous condition. A private contractor or other person operating any snow removal equipment must follow this ordinance. Any violation could result in a fine.

Snow shall be removed from all sidewalks in the city of LaPorte at least 24 hours after the snow has fallen. Any person in violation shall be subject to a fine of $50.
