The Pulaski County Commissioners this week heard a report from Nikki Lowry with the Pulaski County EMS. Lowry said her department is all caught up on past due accounts, and they are doing a cost assessment to get more reimbursements from Medicaid.

Commissioner Larry Brady asked Lowry if her department will take a hit financially because of the Affordable Care Act, which goes into effect Jan. 1, but Lowry said she’s not sure. Lowry explained she’s heard a lot of different answers regarding the act’s effect on EMS departments.

Lowry also mentioned that basic and advanced EMS classes will begin in January and first responder classes will begin in February. She said the department will also be doing some part-time interviews in December.

At Lowry’s request, the commissioners passed a motion to allow ride-alongs with the West Central Health Occupations class to provide a more in-depth educational experience.
