The Oregon-Davis School Corporation has been allocated $30,000 as part of the Secured Schools Safety Grant Program to allow the school to hire a school resource officer. According to Interim Superintendent Greg Briles, the grant will have a positive impact on the schools.

“We think it’s going to have a great impact on our school. What our plans are, is we are going to have a resource officer now, not only in our junior/senior high school, but we will have one in our elementary school, working with our elementary school students as well,” said Briles.

The corporation currently has a resource officer, but the grant funds could only go toward a new resource officer. Briles said as a result, he has worked with two younger individuals in the community who will come to the schools on a daily basis, working with elementary students and staff, to not only provide them with guidance but also a sense of security.

“We’re hoping that once they build a relationship with these officers, moving towards the future, they have that safe feeling when they’re working with them not just inside the school but outside the school,” said Briles.

The grant required matching funds, and the $30,000 matched by the school will be put into the elementary school’s infrastructure to improve safety. Briles said that over the last four months, the corporation has conducted threat and risk assessments throughout both buildings and ensured that all doors can be locked and properly secured.
