North Judson Town Board Approves Unsafe Building Ordinance

In an effort to give the ordinance “more teeth,” the North Judson Town Board this week approved the second and third readings of their unsafe building ordinance that seeks to protect residents from potentially unsafe buildings, structures and premises.

Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry explained that the town already had an unsafe building ordinance but it “didn’t have a lot of teeth in it.” As a result, the town attorney did some research and developed a replacement ordinance that gives the building inspector the authority to act on unsafe buildings if the owner fails to do so.

The ordinance lays out that the building administrator shall be responsible for the administration and enforcement of the ordinance, while the town council shall act as the hearing authority.
